By the 1860s "nigger minstrel" performance were extremely popular. The music and performance style derived from the Southern US states and had become particurlarly topical to English audiences because of the Civil War in America. However, many of the acts in London, including, probably, the Savannah Minstrels here, were actually Europeans made up as "black-face" acts. Ref. SP12/951 S061
