Article announcing the retirement of Sir H.M.Stanley as North Lambeth M.P. He was born in 1841 in Neath, Glamorgan, and brought up in St Asaph workhouse. As a boy he worked his passage from Liverpool to New Orleans, where he was adopted by Mr Stanley a storekeeper and took his name. He enlisted in the Confederate army and fought in the American Civil War. After the war he became a newspaper correspondent and was sent by the New York Herald with the British army on the Abyssinian campaign. His exploration of Africa and discovery of Dr Livingstone gained him public recognition. However, as a Conservative & Liberal Unionist MP, the South London Press wryly noted: 'Sir Henry owed his victory at the last election largely to the influence of his charming wife, who has a high opinion of him. He has not made a great hit in Parliament; but, for exploring things in Darkest Africa, he was considered quite clever'. From 'The Star', dated 3rd May 1900.
