St John's church in Vassall Road, Brixton North, under construction. The church was built as funds permitted with the foundation stone being laid in July 1871. The section illustrated had cost £5,000. St John's was completed by a gift of £10,000 from Rev. Charles Edward Brooke. Only one accident was recorded during contruction when a labourer fell from the chancel arch onto a pile of mortar, although this cushioned the fall, he did break both legs. The building was completed in 1874.
