Located at a major junction, Stockwell Station on Clapham Road opened in 1890. It was the terminus of the City & South London Railway, its main feature being the distinctive dome housing the hydraulic lift equipment of the underground station. The dome was removed when the station was rebuilt later in the 1920s and it was altered once again in 1970 with the advent of the new Victoria Line. The shops seen beyond the station have been considerably altered and replaced by modern offices and shop buildings.
