The British and Foreign School Society's 'Training College for Mistresses' was built in 1861 to the designs of William Beck. The college trained school mistresses and had practising schools attached. It is now replaced by Stockwell Gardens Estate, a large LCC residential complex of five storey apartment blocks built in the 1930s.
