TOLL GATE, KENNINGTON

The Kennington Toll Gate during the 1860s with St. Mark's church in background. To the right is the Kennington Park Road and on the left the road to Croydon. These roads were turned into turnpikes in 1717. The diary of Mr Briant notes: September 13th, 1853 - The new Toll House at Kennington opened at 6 o'clock in the morning'.
