VAUXHALL GARDENS, VAUXHALL

Vauxhall Gardens, Vauxhall. The orchestra stand illuminated on a Gala Night. Showing singers and musicians entertaining the public in the centre of the grove. On either side can be seen the colonnade and supper-boxes. A contemporary account noted, 'when it grows dark the garden near the orchestra is illuminated, almost in an instant, with about 1,500 glass lamps, which glitter among the trees, and render it exceedingly light and brilliant'. Engraving by Rhodes from a drawing by Pugh, published by R.Phillips, 11th June 1804.
