The Prince of Wales meeting a delegation from the Working Men's Committee of the Vauxhall Park Fund at Lambeth Palace on 8th January 1889. The two-year appeal to create a new park for the people of Vauxhall with the purchase of The Lawn, had received £40,000 towards the cost. However, due to a shortfall of £5,000, the men petitioned for assistance from the Prince of Wales, who agreed to meet them at Lambeth - the deputation was led by Chairman Charles Lester, an engine driver. It was agreed to arrange a fund-raising meeting under the auspices of the Kyrle Society with Princess Louise attending. The Graphic notes, ' No doubt, as Mr Lester observed, the neighbourhood is very poor, nevertheless we strongly suspect that the aggregate of the publicans' takings for one Saturday night in Lambeth (exclusive of the harmless and supper-beer) would go a good way towards wiping off the deficit in question'.From The Graphic 19th January 1889
