WRIOTHESLEY RUSSELL AND ELIZABETH HOWLAND

Wriothesley Russell, Marquis of Tavistock and his wife Elizabeth Howland. They were married in the chapel of Streatham Manor in 1685. Elizabeth was 14 years of age. Shortly after the marriage Wriothesley was made Baron Howard of Streatham and was later to become the 2nd Duke of Bedford. The 3rd and 4th Dukes were born in the Manor House at Streatham, the site now marked by Albert Carr Gardens. The wealth of the Howard family and the interests of The East India Company was passed to the Bedford family. Photograph of painting. Original by painting John Riley, at Woburn Abbey, c.1695.
